Angry Restaurant Workers

A place to complain about your customers, co-workers, employees, supervisors, and the stupid things they say and do.

Thursday June 12, 2008

My Mission is to give the restaurant workers of the United States of America a place to vent, and complain anonymously about their supervisors, co-workers, companies, and customers. Although my comments are geared more towards the pizza industry, which is what I have worked for years, this site is for all types of restaurant and food service establishments. If you have ever gotten an annual raise of $0.10/hour, this place is for you!

I have returned to Charlotte, from NY, and things did not go as I planned as far as getting the "marketing" going. There was a delay at Staples getting the cards printed. This set me back, and I did not get them until the day before I left for NY. Then, I was so busy when I got there, I was just slack putting them out. I left a box with a friend, and I'm hoping that he puts them out up there (that's you, Jeff!).

I definitely have not given up on the site, I've just got a  lot of personal issues going on. Plus, with the increased fuel and food costs, I'm so stressed out, that I can't think straight. Please, if you can help with anything, especially the web design, send an e-mail to info@angryrestaurantworkers.com. I will contact you as soon as I can. I am also hoping to bring on a couple of volunteers (friends) that may have some free time to help out with better forum moderation and promotion of the site. If you would like to promote the site in your area, cards can be purchased at Staples. I ordered them under a disconnected phone number (704-277-3114) in the computer. just put it in, and print them out. Prices vary, but I think it was about $35.00 for 1,000 cards.

I am also no where near my user goals, and I am hoping to remedy that very soon. Also, if it has not been mentioned in previous posts, I am holding off on bumper stickers for the time being.  They just cost too much.

One Last note. Sometimes, I rush to put these updates in, and don't always proof read what I'm typing. If you see something completely silly (like a really bad type-o) please send an email, and let me know

This week, I am hoping to promote the site in the Charlotte, NC  area, with some additional promotion in The Buffalo and Rochester NY areas as well. I will be Promoting in Albany, NY in 3 weeks. If you go to the site, and experience delays, it may be due to a limitation imposed by the hosting provider. I hope to have this fixed when I have some advertising revenue come in. Remember, This site is technically a beta, and there are inherent flaws in its design that I don't know how to fix, like auto calculate of tip percents. I will be doing this manually for the time being. I will also be doing geo-coding of addresses manually. There is a limitation in the address field as far as how many characters that I am hoping to update in may.

In the next 2 days, I will have a submission form for any flaws that you find, or features that do not work. You can also place Ideas in it, but I may not know how to implement them. I am also hoping to phase out the original front page design (this page style) and move everything completely to Drupal CMS Design. As Always, enjoy the site, and lets stick it to the man, by bringing awareness to the harsh working environments that we endure!

I have finished importing the user data, so all active users should be able to log in. I have not updated site links yet, however. the link is http://www.angryrestaurantworkers.com/stifflist3/. A couple of changes- There is a new section for employment tracking, instead of doing it through your user information. this will allow you to input your entire pay history, for comparison. If I have time today, I am hoping to do a new page and sub pages about how the Stiff List works, as well as future plans to reimburse drivers the tip that they didn't receive for customers that pay to be removed. Sorry we can't track table diners, because of privacy and identity theft laws.

I have taken off the next 2 weeks from delivering pizza to promote the site. My goal is 100 users by April 1st. I am currently focusing on the delivery side of it, as with the higher gas prices, and lower tips, we are beginning to feel the crunch. And, from conversations I've had with various managers and supervisors across the "Big 3", I believe that they are going to do absolutely nothing to compensate the drivers for higher fuel costs.

Finally, I have successfully uploaded and connected to the New Stiff list (Version 3). I have not imported current user info into it yet. I am hoping to that completed either Monday or Tuesday. The major addition is employer/pay rate tracking. This feature will allow you to track your salary history. It needs work, but it is functional. This allows you to now input your entire (Restaurant) work history. The Goal here, will combine other reports for a comparison. No One can see anyone else's information.

Why? The Goal here is to help create a better bargaining position for increased pay and mileage reimbursement. If the information is input by former employees, you will be able to compare past salaries to your own, or even those of the competition in your area.

Unfortunately, I have an appointment @ 9am, and need to go to bed. Stay tuned for more information appearing over the next 2 days.

Yes, I have been very slack. My "development server" has been turned into a firewall temporarily do test some software for a client, therefore, I had to halt development. I am hoping to resume this evening, for a week to get some things that were updated, uploaded.

For those of you that may not be familiar with the "Main Site", when you register there, you should be able to post comments, stories, and vote on polls. Its not just viewable, its designed to be a place for you to vent, and bring awareness to the industry. While I try not to censor, edit or modify any posts, I will if they are racially motivated (communicating hate, etc) or use an excessive amount of vulgarity.

Again, I apologize for my slackness. I am hoping to have the Stiff List updates uploaded this week. I will attempt to move any existing user names and logins to prevent interruption.

1:45pm

For anyone accessing over the last 2 days, apologies for the site being down. I was moving one of my domains, and the settings were applied to this site. Apparently, all is well now.

Bumper stickers are being put on hold for a couple of more weeks, as I have been developing enhancements to the Stiff List. I have a little bit more testing to do before I upload the changes. All user data should be migrated into the new database. Again, all data entered prior to 01/01/08 will be purged. See 02/16/08 comments and news. Also, when I figure out the system for driver re-imbursement (customers can tip you now to be removed from the list), All users will be sent an e-mail to add the required info. I need to check out tax requirements as far as reporting before I can implement this.

2/16/08

10:30am

So it is going to be the latter date as far as ordering bumper stickers. I am trying to lower the pricing on them. Depending on costs, I will be selling them either:

1. $4.00 each, or 3 for $10.00

2. $3.00 each, or 3 for $8.00

3. $2.50 Each, or 3 for $6.00

I simply will not know until I get the final price on the stickers. Most Likely, it will be option 2. Also, With Great reluctance, I am purging the database of all current entries prior to 01/01/08, and implementing a deletion rule for future entries of 1 year fom the date added. This will help with factors such as temporary residents (renters), or people that move. The logic is that not all people tip, but not all people don't either. If someone moves in 8 months after a non-tipper is entered, then they would be on the list, even if they didn't cause the offense. With this purge comes modifications to the database structure, such as moving out "employment info" to a separate table from the user table. This will allow you to enter more than 1 employer, (you  worked for more than 1 place over the last few years) for a comparison report. This would allow for better wage bargaining. Also, I am combining the house number and street name fields into one. this will help with future geo-coding applications.

10:00am

It's been a long time since I have actively worked on the site. I have been doing alot of work in my head, as far as planning what to do, and what directions to head in. One of my assistant administrators knows people, "that know people?" that can do some of the programming I need to help make the site work the way I want it to.  We are also planning on ordering the bumper stickers either 2/10/08, or 2/24/08. It just depends on how much money I have. They will sell for $5.00 each. If you would like to be a regional contact/manager (a person in your area that can help organize and promote the site) send an email to info@angryrestaurantworkers.com , with your name, email (if different) and phone number, so I can give you the details of what the "job" entails.

I have not stopped developing on the site, I have just been a little (too) busy with work, work 2, school, and the holidays. My good Buddy Dave, wrote a script to calculate a weekly salary into an hourly rate. It works as a stand alone application, and I am working on moving it into the website. this should show managers what they really make per hour, if you factor in overtime. It may be some more time before I develop more features in the stiff list. I have some cool ideas, I just need to make them work right now.

9:00am

Today, I am removing some links, as I prepare to move the site to the new Drupal format. I found a new template which makes it easier to navigate around the site, but I don't like the color scheme. So, I am trying to map which color codes are for certain areas, and replace them. I also put the picture of the "stressed out guy" for my good buddy Dave. On another note, I will probably be be upgrading the server in the next 2 weeks, to a slightly more powerful package. this should help cut down on user limitations for now. I will also be reworking the Stiff List databases, to fix some bugs that exist, starting today.

This site has been designed to be small, so we can get maximum benefit from our inexpensive hosting. I realize that it is not that attractive, and a new site with shiny buttons and cleaner edges is in the works. If this is your first visit to the site, please don't write us off.
